Four Delta Tau Delta alumni who met at Georgia Southern where they joined Epsilon Omega Chapter, were in Indianapolis for the College Football Playoff national championship on January 10.  Delta Tau Delta Former International President Carl Brantley (Georgia Southern University, 1975) joined Tom McMillen  (Georgia Southern University, 1975) Tony Barnhart (Georgia Southern University, 1975) with and Robbie Chester (Georgia Southern University, 1975).

“I transferred to Georgia to go to journalism school and the guys adopted Georgia,” said Barnhart, who wrote about witnessing Georgia’s win of the historic game at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Barnhart was president of Epsilon Omega Chapter in 1972-1973. He was recognized with Delta Tau Delta’s Alumni Achievement Award at the Indianapolis Karnea in 2006.   

In the spring of 2021, Barnhart was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Known as “Mr. College Football,” Barnhart is one of the most knowledgeable sports personalities working today. He spent 25 years as the national college football reporter for the Atlanta-Journal Constitution and worked with CBS Sports before joining the SEC Network during its launch. He contributes on the radio to 680 The Fan in Atlanta, has written multiple books on college football and was named Georgia Sportswriter of the Year in 1999. Among his first books “Southern Fried Football: The History, Passion and Glory of the Great Southern Game,” “What It Means to be a Bulldog” and “Vince Dooley-My 40 Years at Georgia.”   

Barnhart has been honored with the Bert McGrane Award from the College Football Writers Association and named a Grady Fellow by the Henry Grady School of Journalism at UGA.

It was Georgia’s first national championship in 41 years.
